SOLENT SCOW CLASS OFFICIAL SPECIFICATIONS 1950

 

Article 1 – Explanation

A Solent Scow, its spares and sails, must conform strictly throughout with respect to design, dimensions, construction and material to the official plans and specification. The Solent Scow Class measurement and certificate is the only recognised point of eligibility in the class.

Article 2 – Hull Dimensions

Length overall                                  11’3”

Article 3 – Painting

To be given at least three coats of paint or varnish, each well rubbed down with fine sandpaper.

Article 4

Boats shall be built to the one design plans and scantlings, approved by the class.

Article 5

Tolerances of ½” plus or minus shall not be exceeded.

Article 6

The weight of the hull shall not be less than 210lbs including rudder, tiller, bottom boards and dropkeel.

Article 7

Dropkeel shall weigh 31lbs with an allowed tolerance of plus or minus 5lbs.

Article 8

One shroud each side and one forestay to mast head is obligatory. The halliard may be led to a block at the stemhead to form the forestay.

Article 9

Materials optional, but must be wood – NOT threeply, plastic or fibreglass, nor other substitutes.

Article 10

List of equipment which shall be carried by Solent Scows:-

  • Pair oars and rowlocks, of standard pattern
  • Buoyancy gear to support 168lbs, when scow submerged.

Such gear to be constructed and attached to the scow that it cannot be dislodged or rendered ineffective in any ordinary accident of the sea.

  • Kedge, not less than 4lbs weight, and 10 fathoms line.
  • A bailer – to be attached to the scow.
  • A light bamboo sounding cane to be optional

Article 11 – Scantlings, 11’3” Clinker Built Scow (Available for wood scows)

NOTE   Dropkeel is cut from 3/16” mild steel plate. Weight with handle and pin approx 31 lbs.
